Expectations of Position Players
1st Base
-
Player needs to be able to catch
anything thrown at her, whether the ball is in the dirt, right or left,
or a high throw.

After making the out at first,
be able to make a play at 2nd, 3rd or home
-
Transition the ball quickly
from glove to hand
-
Cover bunts on her side of the
field
-
Backup the catcher at home when
there is a runner at 3rd, or if there is a potential play at home.
-
And, know when to get out of
the way from home to 1st if she is up and out of position to make the force
at 1st base
2nd Base
-
Player
is expected to be quick on her feet, covering any groundball hit between
1st and 2nd base
-
Catch
any fly ball hit behind the 1st baseman
-
Cover
1st base on a bunt situation, when the 1st baseman is up and out of position
to cover the bag
-
Backup
any throw from home to 2nd if the short stop is in position to make the
play at 2nd
-
Cover
2nd and make the play at 2nd if the short stop is covering 3rd or is fielding
the hit ball
-
To act
as a cut-off if a ball is hit long to the outfielder on the right side
of the field
-
Cover
2nd base when there is a runner at 2nd in a potential pick off situation.
3rd Base
-
Needs
to cover any bunt on her side of the field, plus the area between the pitchers
mound and home plate
-
Needs
to be able to field hit balls between the pitcher's mound and third base
line
-
Needs
to be aggressive in getting the baserunner from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to home.
-
Needs
to be able to keep a runner at 3rd, while making a throw to 1st.
-
Needs
to have a strong, accurate arm to make the throw from the 3rd base line
to 1st
Short Stop
-
To field
every ground ball from 3rd to 2nd base
-
To field
every pop up behind the 3rd baseman and behind 2nd base, short of the outfielder.

Take charge
of the infield. She has priority over the infielders.
-
Has the
strongest throwing arm of the infielders.
-
Take any
throw from the catcher to 2nd base on a steal.
-
Acts as
the primary cut off when there is a deep hit to the outfield.
-
Covers
3rd or 2nd base, depending on the baserunner situation
-
Be able
to make smart play decisions when there are base runners on 3rd and 2nd.
-
Catches
all popups behind the pitcher not easily caught by the 2nd baseman.
Catcher
-
Catches
or blocks every pitched ball.
-
Makes
accurate throws in pick off situations
-
Makes
accurate & quick throws in steal situations
-
Covers
the area directly in front of home plate for bunts or pop ups
-
Communications
to the fielders pertinent information such as outs, where the batter generally
hits the ball
-
Communications
the selected pitch to the pitcher
-
Aggressive
at the plate when a baserunner is attempting to score.
-
Knows
when to throw, and when to not throw
Pitcher
-
Practices
regularly to develop their technique
-
Develops
various pitches
-
Keeps
the ball off the center of the plate

Consistantly
changing the speed of the ball as well as working cornings and the "black"
part of the plate.

Accepting
the fact that a pitcher may have to be replaced in certain situations or
if the team is effectively hitting her pitches.

To make
smart plays when there are base runners
Left Fielder
-
To catch
every fly ball

To field
or stop every ground ball hit to the outfield

Needs
to "call off" the 3rd baseman or short stop, if the left fielder has a
better opportunity to catch the ball

Has to
be fast on her feet

let any fly ball drop if a little more effort is required to make the catch
in the air

to run at full speed, ALWAYS

must be able to slide (straight on slide, pop up slides and hook slides)

Knows
when to hook slide.

Listens
to the coach's instructions

Draws
the throw from the catcher so that the next base can be stolen or the ball
is overthrown.

Takes
aggressive leads from the bases.
-
Knows
when to "tag up".
-
Knows
their strengths and weaknesses
-
Takes
charge of getting to the next base, if the coach is distracted.
-
Once a
base is reached, their primary goal is to get to the next base safely,
until they touch HOME PLATE.
